4TH ANNUAL MIDWEST BONSAI SPRING SHOW WORKSHOPS
May 17 and 18
All workshops are $60.00, payable to Midwest Bonsai Society at the time of registration, plus material costs payable to the workshop leader at the time of the workshop. For example, workshop #1, Roots over Rock, costs $60 to MBS and $30 to Martha Meehan. Each workshop comes with a box lunch.

1) MARTHA MEEHAN: ROOTS OVER ROCK
Materials: $30
Using Acer Buergeranum (Trident Maple), a tree will be placed over a 6 inch rock, in nursery pots, in the exposed roots-over-rock style. The exposed roots will quickly thicken. Trident maples are among the hardier maples.

1A) DAVID KREUTZ: INTRODUCTION TO AZALEAS
Materials: $25
David will use domestically grown azaleas to this standard of bonsai material. Trees are mame height (6 - 8 inches) with 1/2" trunks and nice branching. Known for their showy flowers in late spring.
Skill: Beginners
2) BRIAN CISKOWSKI: SHIMPAKU JUNIPER
Materials: $65
These Shimpaku junipers have 1-1/2 inch trunks and good branching. Cut back from bushes, these junipers have compact growth and are very durable. Very common bonsai material. Comes with ceramic pot.
Skill: Intermediate / Advanced

3) JIM DOYLE: EUOYNMUS GROUP PLANTING
Materials: $50
Known as burning bush or fire tree (for its scarlet leaves in the fall), 5 winged euonymus trees, 4-8 years old, will be shaped and potted in a forest planting using a Japanese pot. These are all collected trees from around Nature's Way Nursery. Trees are shohin height, 6-12 inches tall.

4) FRANK MIHALIC: WHITE PINE
Materials: $125
These imported Mame (6-8 inches tall) white pines have 3/4" - 1" trunks and are well established. Traditional bonsai material in Japan, white pines carry shorter needles in 5 needle groups in compact clumps. Greate material.

5) BRIAN CISKOWSKI: FICUS NERIFOLIA
Materials: $100
These narrow leaf ficus trees are shohin height (6-12 inches tall) and have 2 inch trunks. Very prolific growers and very sturdy tropical trees, they like regular trimming and are among the favorites of tropcial trees.

6) SEAN SMITH: TANUKI WITH JUNIPER PROCUMBENS NANA
Materials: $35
Tanuki is the practice of combining a living tree with deadwood, carving and shaping the wood to enhance the appearance of the living tree, creating the appearance of a much older tree. Properly done, the combination appears to be one tree. Tanuki is widely accepted in Japan.

7) JIM DOYLE: BLACK PINE
Materials: $235
These nursery grown Japanese Black Pines have 1 to 1 1/2 inch trunks, offering the strong appearance and interesting bark they are known for. Established in mica pots, focus will be on the culture and care, and stylying of the trees.

8) MATHA MEEHAN: SHOHIN JASMINE
Materials: $25
Jamine nudifolrum are tropical trees that flower readily when happy. These shohin height (6 - 12 inches tall) trees come with a bonsai pot, and are durable tropical trees. The flowers tend towards a fairly pungent scent, and are usually white. Good beginner material.
