Workshop Schedule for the 31st Annual Mid-America Show

All Workshops have a $60 Workshop Fee in addition to the Materials Fee listed below with the workshop.

Friday, August 15: 1:00pm - 4:00pm
1) FRANK MIHALIC: JAPANESE WHITE PINE
Materials: $150
Japanese White Pines are a standard bonsai tree in Japan. These trees are 18-20 inches tall, and have 1 to 1 1/2 inch trunks, with nice branching and development. White pines have about two inch needles in 5 needle bunches.

2) MARTHA MEEHAN: FICUS ROOT OVER ROCK
Materials: $30
Using ficus Burtt-davyi, this tree will be placed over a rock with its roots descending into the soil of a nursery pot, the best method for developing a viable root system. This ficus is a tropical tree and very durable. Great beginner tree.

3) BILL VALAVANIS: CHINESE FRINGE TREE
Materials: $60
After a powerpoint presentation on unusual bonsai species, students will prune, wire and shape a Chinese Fringe Tree - a new species for bonsai training in the United States. Similar to Witch hazel, this species has red dish leaves and bright pink flowers that look like a spider.

Skill Level: Intermediate / Advanced
4) BRIAN CISKOWSKI: CRABAPPLE
Materials: $25
Workshop using Malus Indian Magic; these trees have 1/2 inch trunks and are already planted in ceramic pots. Trees have great spring foliage, are prolific bloomers, and will bear fruit. Early wiring and training is best as older wood is hard to bend.

5) GUY GUIDRY: BRING YOUR OWN MATERIAL
Work with Guy Guidry, our Judge this year, to refine your own bonsai. Guy is from Louisiana and won Best of Show several years ago with his Swamp Cypress, a collected tree. He is widely known and acknowledged as a leading bonsai practitioner and bonsai nurseryman.

Skill Level: Intermediate / Advanced
6) FRANK MIHALIC: HOKKAIDO ELM
Materials: $35
Participants will create a mame bonsai with these 4-6 inch tall trees with 1/2 inch trunks. Hokkaido Elm leaves adapt easily to bonsai size. Elms are prolific growers and very durable.

7) BRIAN CISKOWSKI: KOREAN HORNBEAM FOREST
Materials: $60
Using Carpinus Coreana, 5 trees will be placed in an 11 inch ceramic tray. Hornbeams grow with contorted branching, and have small leaf clusters, adapting well to group plantings.

8) MIKE HANSEN: CORK BARK ELM
Materials: $120
These Shohin sized trees (8-10 inches tall) are imported, with 1 to 1 1/2 inch trunks. These Elms already show nice branching and develop beautiful corky trunks that add greatly to the appearance of age.

9) JIM DOYLE: SHIMPAKU JUNIPER
Materials: $200
Advanced carving and styling workshop. This workshop focuses on carving techniques, and styling theory of 1 to 1 1/2 inch trunked junipers. Students should have carving tools, a die grinder, and/or a Dremel power tool. Some will be provided, along with bits.

10) BRUSSELS MARTIN: DWARF PYRACANTHA
Materials: $80
These trees are 18-24 inches tall with nicely curving trunks, and are 8 years old. Also known as Firethorn, it is a quick grower with small flowers in late spring and profuse small berries. A great show tree.

11) ANDY SMITH: PONDEROSA PINE
Materials: $50 - $200
These are all collected trees, ranging in size and age (about 30 - 100 years). Participants will choose the tree they want, based on appearance and price, and work with Andy to enhance the shape and styling of the tree. These are one of the more durable pine trees, coming out of harsh mountain environments.

12) BILL VALAVANIS: SHOHIN CREPE MYRTLE
Materials: $45
A powerpoint presentation on the history, care and training of shohin bonsai will begin the workshop. Students will shape a new cultivar of Minature Crepe Myrtle which has small pink flowers on very short shoots. The beautiful smooth bark combined with the very small leaves and flowers make this Myrtle a natural for small sized bonsai.

13) GUY GUIDRY: BRING YOUR OWN MATERIAL

14) JIM DOYLE: KOREAN BOXWOOD
Materials: $50
These rare 12-15 inch tall trees are 15+ years old, and are true dwarfs with small leaves. These trees have been container grown since birth. Trunks are 1/3 to 1/2 inch and have great branching for styling. Culture information and potting included.
Limit: 10

15) SEAN SMITH: TANUKI WITH JUNIPER PROCUMBENS NANA
This workshop has been canceled, due to Sean Smith's inability to attend the show. Checks have not been cashed, so check with the Society information desk in the mall hall if you were registered for this workshop.
16) BRUSSELS MARTIN: DWARF HOLLY
Materials: $40
A relatively new small leaf evergreen, these hollys are 14-18 inches tall and 7 years old. Hollys have multipointed leaves, and these Numalaria variety are smaller than other hollys.

17) FRANK MIHALIC: CHILDREN'S WORKSHOP
Total Cost: $30
For children 7-12 years old, Frank will guide them in styling and shaping a shimpaku Juniper. Shimpaku Junipers are the gentlest junipers, are very durable, and a common species for bonsai. Each participant will take home a tree in a pot and Frank's own book, Bonsai for Children.
